Is It Really All Over For Ad Folks?
I'm torn. The argument goes that the future will consist of great products that no longer require agencies to sell them, thanks to super-slick social media. God knows there has been plenty of great campaigns over the years that have undeniably helped increase product sales. Without the skills of adfolk it’s reasonable to assume that products associated with these memorable campaigns would lapse into invisibility. Creative advertising is a service I think we'll always need. However good the products get, and however slickly connected we all are, you can guarantee that products are going to be competing in a massively crowded and noisy marketplace. And that's where creativity can be really helpful. Besides, doesn't advertising have the power to improve the world? Want to sell a car? You could kill a cow and give it leather seats. Or you could put the money behind making cloth seats more desirable. I might go futher. The value of any branded item often decays far more slowly than the value of unbranded equivalent. Those Chanel sunglasses you buy today will still fetch a fair price on eBay in 20 years time when third-hand, while their cheaper unbranded equivalents have been clogging up a landfill for a decade. In spite of all the doom and gloom projections regarding the future of advertising, I remain optimistic. Perhaps ignorant and naïve, but nonetheless optimistic.
